When it comes to running, I am pretty disciplined. I really could use that discipline in other areas of my life. How about the discipline to do my hair and makeup everyday? Or to follow through with consequences of all kinds for my kids? Or to cook healthy dinners every night? Or to throw amazing birthday parties for my kids? I’ll have to work on those.
Anyway, I am pretty disciplined when it comes to running, but I used to be even more so. Before I had Lou, in 2010 and 2011 I was super disciplined with training. I didn’t own a treadmill so every single run was done outside- even if it was 3 miles. I also woke up early 5 days a week- no question. My rest days were Wednesdays and Sundays. I was actively pursing faster paces always. I did every training run alone. And I improved a lot!
Ever since my bonk at Utah Valley I have tried to go back to being that girl. When I consider any aspect of training I ask myself, what would the Maury in 2010 do?
So, as a reminder to myself to stay true to 2010 Maury, I’ll post these first-ever running pictures (in progressive order.) What’s most funny about them is that they were not taken with a phone (I never ran with a phone back then!) I had to run holding my camera and it felt funny that day to hold something so big. (These days I am constantly holding my phone while running. Maybe that’s what’s slowing me down! Ha!) I had been running at sunrise for two or three years before I took these pictures. It took me that long to finally decide that it was time to document my favorite part of the day. (Today everyone takes pictures of everything so it seems crazy to be doing something for years before I actually took a picture of it.)
I feel like I am making some real progress at getting back to that girl, her dedication, and her drive. I really do! It feels good to get back to her and visit her and live in her shoes again. I know I still do a couple weekly runs on the treadmill, but if 2010 Maury had had a treadmill, she’d have used it right?
