(This is me taking a Gu during the 2011 Big Sur Marathon. I can run with my eyes closed AND fuel at the same time.)
When it started to get warm during my early morning summer runs, I changed to fueling exclusively with Gatorade. Mainly because I was so thirsty and drinking Gatorade killed two birds with one stone- calories, electrolytes, and hydration.
Even before then, my long run fueling was pretty sporadic- a Honey Stinger waffle here, a handful of Starburst there. Nothing consistent.
Then I would race (Utah Valley, Rio, St. George) and fuel with Gu and end up with a stomachache. I never put the two together that I was racing with a fuel that I wasn’t used to and that I was getting a stomachache. Seems obvious enough, but sometimes I’m pretty brainless like that.
When my coach told me to fuel for last week’s 15 miler with a Gu at miles 7 and 12, I thought it would be no problem. I took in my first Gu at mile 7 and the racing stomachache came. Not bad, but it was there. A light bulb went off. My stomach gets a Gu dropped in it and it’s not happy.
Pre-Lou Maury used to be the queen of Gu. I trained with it. I would have one before a tempo run or interval workout. I would take them in during long runs. My body was used to it.
Just another thing I need to get back to doing. And….
I’m on it!
