Monday was hill intervals on the treadmill- my favorite! The workout called for a 2 mile warm up and cool down 8×1:30 hill climbs (at 6-8%) with 2 minute rest intervals… But by the time I stopped getting distracted by things around the house and got on the treadmill, I was pressed for time. So I cut warm up and cool down to one mile and rest intervals were 1:30. The first 6 intervals felt fine… the last two did not feel fine.
Tuesday was an aerobic 8 mile run with last two miles at 8:20. This run felt good. Maybe I’m not totally “out of shape” after all.Wednesday was an easy 4.Thursday was a 5K test. I don’t think I have ever told you how much I loathe the 5K test (more on racing short distances later.) I’m not the best at pushing myself at a really hard effort level for short distances. I warmed up for 2 miles, then started the 5K. Miles 1 and 2 were fine, but as soon as my Garmin beeped when mile 2 was over, I needed to walk- just for a second… that turned into like 5 seconds of me talking internally about how much I hate racing shorter distances 🙂 I got back to it after the walk break but then spent the rest of the 1.1 mile telling myself I was dumb for taking the walk break. Then a one mile cool down back home.Friday was another easy 4:Saturday was a long run- 14 miles. In the morning, after I ate a small pre-run meal, I filled up my handheld water bottle with Gatorade, set it down, then went to get dressed. When I walked back into the kitchen, the Gatorade had leaked out and the fabric part of the handle/pouch was soaked with Gatorade so I cleaned up the mess real quick, tossed the handheld in the sink, and headed out with nothing. I knew I’d have to rely on gas stations for water stops. Gas stations are convenient for water stops, but I really dislike how much time it takes. I’m not a huge fan of pausing my watch. I’d rather hide a water bottle, run by and grab it, take a couple quick drinks while I walk fast, then hide it again. I’ll be more prepared next week.During the 14 miler, I saw three hot air balloons. That’s when you know the Arizona weather is cooling down. I had never seen a hot air balloon until I was about 14 (after I moved to Arizona- also when I saw my first cactus.) I still think they’re cool to see and my kids get so excited when they spot them.Weekly mileage keeps on climbing- this week was 40.75.
